Mission Developer, The Reverend Darryl Rashad Kemp
Rev. Kemp hails from Baltimore, Maryland, where he was born and raised. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Howard University in 2012, where he was initiated into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Chapter in 2011. He went on to receive a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in 2018.In 2025, he completed a Certificate of Anglican Studies at the Stevenson School for Ministry, leading to his ordination as a Transitional Celebrant in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. He is also a fellow of Princeton Theological Seminary’s Black Theology and Leadership Institute (2016) and a graduate of the U.S. Army Chaplain Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina (2016). Rev. Kemp is currently a doctoral candidate at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

After graduating from Howard University, Rev. Kemp served eight years honorably in the United States Army as both a combat medic and a chaplain. His military service was marked by deep dedication to those under his care, whether on the medical field or the spiritual battlefield. Beyond his military duties, he invested in local communities by counseling underrepresented youth, coaching sports teams, and helping provide meals for the homeless during the holidays. During this time, he also embraced his most cherished calling: fatherhood, raising his four children, Danielle, Christian, Chloe, and Darryl Jr.

Following his transition from military service, Rev. Kemp served as Community Engagement Coordinator for TurnAround, Inc., a Baltimore-based rape crisis center that supports survivors of human trafficking, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence. His vocational path soon led him to pastoral ministry within the Baltimore Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church, where he was called to serve as Senior Pastor of Mt. Zion UMC in Mechanicsville, Maryland (2022 to 2024). Notably, he was the first African American pastor in the church’s history since its founding in 1841.

Most recently, Rev. Kemp served as a liturgical intern at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis, Maryland, a role that culminated in his ordination to the Episcopal Church. He has now been appointed as Mission Developer for the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. In this capacity, he serves as spiritual leader for three historic African descent congregations in Baltimore: St. Mary the Virgin, St. Michael and All Angels, and St. Katherine of Alexandria. He is charged with guiding a three-year phased redevelopment initiative focused on fostering spiritual unity, cultivating leadership, and discerning mission with the ultimate goal of forming a vibrant, sustainable congregation of African descent. Rev. Kemp’s life and ministry are marked by a steadfast commitment to service, reconciliation, and the building of beloved community. Whether through military chaplaincy, nonprofit leadership, or parish ministry, his journey reflects a deep dedication to honoring the dignity of all God’s children and leading communities toward healing, growth, and inclusivity.
